Movie Reboots

How many reboots will there be in the movie theatres? This is the generation of unoriginal movies. We get recession and rehash. Yippee, thanks a ton. Think we need to do something. Thank God Dave Eggers is getting his hat into the ring; someone willing to use his brain and ours. Not to mention his charity. But why work hard on a good story when Hollywood can ruin something already good? Like Chris Pine will be the 4th actor to be Jack Ryan in one of the Tom Clany novels going to screen. That's a 4th reboot. 4th times a charm?!
Though I like some reboots, like the aforementioned Pine's Star Trek and I feel certain I'll like Where the Wild Things Are & The Crazies but with movies like all the crappy Transformers flicks and even the Nightmare on Elm Street coming, I can't help but feel alittle insulted. Our over stimulated minds, high on video games and Code Red and Facebook can't take an original idea that might make us think? Try us dammit...

Though I'm not the first to say this, Max Brooks' World War Z was a great book. Great snippets of entrenched people fighting for their lives and of course, zombies. I really enjoyed the audio version of it too.

Ayn Rand idiots

Blaming the crap economy on Ayn Rand.
I've been hearing for some time about the Ayn Rand school of thought being the downfall of our economy and the reason we're in our current state. The individualism that she touted (from what I remember) has supposedly translated into selfishness and greediness. Now, I'm no Ayn Rand fan but how idiotic are we all to bow and distort her message into greed. Like we need her as an excuse! When the hell did good old fashioned greed for money and power become Ayn Rand's? Those are thousands of years older than her. And please, let's not give her the credit when it's not due. She wrote fiction. Society let alone philosophy owes her squat. Understand it's in our human nature to have self interest. Need it to live. You know this inherently without Ayn or me.
Plus, if you grew up idoilizing Ayn Rand after reading her books in high school, you have your own issues.
I wonder what Ayn would say...I'm almost certain it wouldn't be what these two over educated spaz's are saying:

Lets rant about originality

Welcome to Ryan Sherwood's blog - a place for creativity and conversation.
I'm a writer and a reader, probably no different from many out there, looking for exposure and also those like me. And in that search we surely have got some things to talk about. Whether it is advice needed to be given or issues needed to be talked about, lets get it out and known.
My first point is creativity. How many of you have heard that every original idea is already done by Shakespeare? Or Dickens? That what you write is your spin on things, which is true, but its all been done before. You have no shot at something new. I don't even care if that's true, which it shouldn't be, its no way to live as a writer or even as a person. I find if I accept that fact I'll fall into some subtle trap that'll keep me from really exploring new realms. Keeping me from the author I want to be, must be.
I find that many writing movies and some books now have fallen into the subtle trap that threatens us all on originality. It could be the belief of 'no chance of originality' that governs some underperforming but its offspring has a name and has been courting many - the formula. Sure some formulas work, they could even be considered genres, but people need to stop relying on them. Rely on the bad movies you've seen and the grim stories you read and know why they suck and rely on the great flims and supurb books to give you that seemless feel that good fiction should have. You know you did something right in a story when it feels like it should have been written long ago. That could be a sign of a story's longevity.
Some say its not so much as coming up with something new, its having a new way of showing the old - and thats what I'm kind of combating. And I wish to push aside 'its all been done' and leave it with the 8 track, where it belong. The point is, the new is possible. Showing the old in a new light isn't bad, it's just limiting. And limits only hinder true exploration. To really explore we have to push beyond and into the new. And its out there, we're not that bitter and advanced as people to have found and done everything.
